Any young professional will admit that one of the hardest parts of the 9-5 grind is the lack of flexibility—and the lack of movement. Our bodies and minds are not meant to be stagnant, although most work environments are designed otherwise.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who work at a company that believes in summer Fridays, then this is your time to get rid of your stale habits and get moving. Whether you get a few hours or a whole day (um, jealous), it’s important to take advantage of this time and spend it doing something that fills you with joy—and gives you that oh-so-important dose of Vitamin D.
Make your mermaid dreams come true
When the temperatures are rising, the best way to keep cool is by taking a dip in the water. If you get bored at pools or find oceans a bit intimidating, there are so many different water activities for you to try. Even major cities like New York City and Los Angeles have opportunities for you to rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boards or jet skis. Grab your bestie, significant other or even take yourself out for a little “me time,” and enjoy your Friday afternoon on the water.
Ok, this one might be obvious but it’s still worth mentioning. Weekends are the perfect time to get away from the hustle and bustle, especially when you have a few extra hours added. Planes, trains, automobiles—there are a million ways to get you wherever you want to go, whether that’s escaping to the beach for a romantic weekend, hopping across the state border for a weekend of wine and sunshine or just about anything in between.
Be a tourist in your own city
Sometimes we need a few extra hours in our day to remind us to stop and smell the roses. If you often catch yourself falling into a routine and not taking advantage all that your city has to offer, now’s the time to make a change. Be a tourist for a day. It’s as simple as it sounds. Brush up on the biggest landmarks, museums, pop-up shops, parks and restaurants that you’ve missed out on while trying to assimilate to the city that you call home. You might even discover what you’ve been missing all along.
Sweat in the sunshine
Trying to soak up as much as much sun as possible. Join a group run in the park, do a set of squats in your backyard or even follow your favorite fitness video as you’re catching rays on your balcony. If you need more motivation, invite a friend or coworker to an outdoor workout class and get your sweat on. Then end your Friday right with a big glass of vino.
Cruise around town
Walking is a thing of the past, at least on your summer Fridays. Rent a bike—you can reserve one through ClassPass!—and see where the journey takes you. Maybe you’ll find a part of the city you’ve never explored before. Or maybe you’ll end up at the donut shop down the street. Both sound good to us!
